Rassismus.Macht.Identität

Abstract This article discusses identity construction under racism. It investigates effects of experiencing racist discrimination and strategies people develop to cope with. Racism as a global phenomenon produces social inequality and creates different identities. The experience of racist discrimination questions the person as a whole and can influence the self-image. At the same time these experiences of racism place the subject on the position of the so called “Other” in contrast to the hegemonic invisible “We”. Both positions are created by racism as a structural phenomenon of society that divides people on behalf of the imagination of racial difference. The aim of this article is to portray these dynamics of identity construction in consideration of racism. After a theoretical approach data gained from qualitative interviews are presented. They show that the “Afro-Austrian” interview partners are familiar with experiencing racism and being placed as the “Other”. As a result they internalised a self-concept of being different. The last chapter deals with ways of resistance and an idea of a critical psychology that reflects itself, creates spaces for exchange and provides assistance for people who experience racist discrimination.
