Social Movement Unionism in Turkey: Yatağan Resistance Case1

1. Introduction

Increasing effects of globalisation and neoliberalism worldwide, from the 1980s to the present has created important consequences on unions as well as on economic, social, and political spheres of life. The positive economic and social conditions before 1980 presented an opportunity for the progress and the strength of the unions; however, after the 1980s new conditions led to the loss of the ability of organisations and powers of unions. The growth period, which projects the state intervention in economic life, welfare state policies, and industrial relations that had supported the economic and social power of unions, lost its influence with the changes after 1980. Thus, a new period that had an impact on the union movement began. Indeed, the effects which were created by globalisation on work conditions such as flexibility in labour process, privatisation, the changing structure of labour force, unemployment, growth of the informal sector and new understandings of management in firms led to a considerable decrease in organised power of labour and social power of unions.
