Novice Principals, Their Transition to the Work and Challenges

1. Introduction

There has been increasing attention on school principals, their recruitment, eligibility, preparation, and professional development in leadership literature recently. Empirical evidence suggests that principals make a difference in the school improvement process (Augustine, Gonzalez, Ikemoto, Russell, Zellman, Constant & Dembosky, 2009; Coburn, 2005; Grissom & Loeb, 2011; Louis & Kruse, 1995; McLaughlin & Talbert, 2006; Rosenholtz, 1989; Waters, Marzano, & McNulty, 2003). It is revealed that school principals have a significant, direct, and indirect effect on student outcomes (Hallinger & Heck, 1996; Leithwood, Mascall, Strauss, Sacks, Memon, & Yashkina, 2007; Robinson, 2008).
