The need for a dwelling is at the origin of urbanization1 Ildefonso Cerdà
Abstract. In this essay we analyzed the Istrian-Dalmatian area from the first formation of settlements until the present-day towns. By considering geographical and temporal aspects, we showed that the formation of urban areas mirrored human activities, which left a permanent and characteristic mark on the territory. Particular attention was given to fundamental periods for the growth and development of the coastline and hinterland, namely, the Pre-Roman, Roman, Venetian, Austro-Hungarian, and Yugoslavian periods.
