Literatura e Outras Artes

Construção da Memória em Angola e Moçambique

Series:

Edited By Ineke Phaf-Rheinberger, Ana Sobral and Selma Pantoja

Ana Mafalda Leite (Universidade Lisboa)

Nascer com a Nação

The permanently shifting sense of place experienced by those born into a Portuguese colony and then raised during the turbulence of early independence could be described as “living among frontiers”. In this essay, Leite’s autobiographical observations are combined with the professional necessity to work on the legitimation of a literary corpus of the “new” literatures of Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe. The essay gives an overview of some of the key authors of these regions and questions postcolonial approaches to African literary studies in their effort to construct a critical instance by way of literary texts. The author of this essay herself is a leading critic in this respect, with a series of relevant publications.
