Literatura e Outras Artes

Construção da Memória em Angola e Moçambique

Series:

Edited By Ineke Phaf-Rheinberger, Ana Sobral and Selma Pantoja

Taking into consideration the premise of filmmaker Ruy Guerra, that a country must “create its own collective image, in a process of ‘existing’ towards the ‘other’,” as well as the statement by Octavio Paz (2003) that the power of language born out of the word leads to something that transcends it and leads the image to regain wings, this essay reflects critically on some of the narratives and images of the postcolonial nation in both Angola and Mozambique. It proposes a discussion of the ways in which such narratives, in a positive dialogue between cinema and literature, evoke the history of a specific epoch in the representation of a collective memory, bringing to the fore the necessity of narrating a ‘reality’ of the postcolonial nation. The essay focuses on two film works, O Herói (Angola 2004) by Zezé Gamboa, and O grande Bazar (Moçambique 2006) by Licinio de Azevedo, as well as some literary works by Angolan and Mozambican authors such as Mia Couto, José Craveirinha and Manuel Rui.
