Literatura e Outras Artes

Construção da Memória em Angola e Moçambique

Series:

Edited By Ineke Phaf-Rheinberger, Ana Sobral and Selma Pantoja

José Luís Mendonça and the Journal Cultura. A Critical Debate

José Luís Mendonça is an Angolan poet, novelist, and journalist. He can be seen as representative of a generation of people who, raised during wartime, have only experienced peace-time in Angola in the last fifteen years. This essay explores how writers can build on these experiences in literature and also combine them with cultural strategies that contribute to solidifying the cultural memory and heritage of Angola. This contribution gives insights into the setup of Mendonca’s first novel O reino das casuarinas (2014) and of his work as the director of Cultura. The Journal for Literature and Art. It is also concerned with overcoming the opposition created between anti-colonial expectations and postcolonial reality.
