The Influence of Level of Extroversion, Locus of Control and Gender on Listening and Reading Proficiency in Second Language Acquisition

This book is an investigation into the correlation between level of extroversion, orientation of locus of control and gender. Level of extroversion and gender are widely recognised as key factors influencing the process of Second Language Acquisition, although there remains much debate as to the nature of this influence. Locus of Control has equally been identified as a key predictor of success in academic learning. Taking these points into consideration, the authors analyze the correlation between these three key factors and success in reading and listening on students of English at the university level. The investigation includes both a quantitative analysis and qualitative explanatory interviews.

Chapter 1 General introduction to, and overview of SLA

The purpose ascribed to the first chapter is to establish an overall context for the present study. The first section is a taxonomical discussion of the main terms present in the title of the work. This is deemed necessary in order to clarify exactly why the use of each of the terms is justified within the context of this work, and also to ensure clarification in the meaning of the terms. The remainder of the chapter is devoted to a brief overview of the development of the field of SLA, starting with its evolution from the investigation of First Language Acquisition, and leading up to the current state of affairs within the field.

1.1 Taxonomy

Because of the truly global nature of the study of how people learn languages, the heterogeneous nature of the studies (implying a lack of convention), and the fact that in different countries different norms apply, there is a plethora of terms that are applied, none more contentious than the idea of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) itself. Therefore, before embarking on a study, it is necessary to first establish what the terms to be used actually mean.
