The Influence of Level of Extroversion, Locus of Control and Gender on Listening and Reading Proficiency in Second Language Acquisition

This book is an investigation into the correlation between level of extroversion, orientation of locus of control and gender. Level of extroversion and gender are widely recognised as key factors influencing the process of Second Language Acquisition, although there remains much debate as to the nature of this influence. Locus of Control has equally been identified as a key predictor of success in academic learning. Taking these points into consideration, the authors analyze the correlation between these three key factors and success in reading and listening on students of English at the university level. The investigation includes both a quantitative analysis and qualitative explanatory interviews.

Chapter 3 Research Design and Results


In the following, the research design and methodology will be presented and discussed. First the theoretical assumptions which underline the project rationale will be reviewed before the research questions and hypotheses are explained. Following this, there will be a description of the context and participants of the project and a detailed analysis of the various instruments used in the process of data collection. Finally the procedure will be described, along with steps taken to attempt to reduce and mitigate the challenges which are an inevitable part of any investigation into the human sciences. As mentioned (in the introductory section), this research project has been built around the notion of an explanatory sequential mixed method approach (a research model proposed by John Creswell 2014:224–225), whereby the quantitative analysis is followed up by an ensuing qualitative interview designed to gain further information to help shed light on the results generated during the quantitative stage, thus facilitating an informed discussion of the results. In this particular study, the quantitative stage is devoted to the collection of data pertaining to the level of extroversion and LOC of the participants, and also the examination of level of proficiency in reading and listening.

3.1 Theoretical Considerations

In this section, the theoretical assumptions which underline the work will be presented, and then, on the basis of the aforementioned, the research questions and main hypotheses will be forwarded.
