About the book
Our society is highly effected by the digital revolution. This book describes with examples and new concepts the discrimination created by the Digital World at different layers of the society. The author analyzes the new technological ecosystem with components like the Digital Ghetto and describes the measures which need to be taken in the future. He evaluates this new digital world focusing on several aspects of social relations and lifestyles. The book also analyzes the mistakes made while entering the Information Age. Furthermore, the author answers the question if human society is ready for the amenities of services like Social Media, e-learning, energy and self-driving cars or if they actually make our lives more difficult and complicated.

Preface
I met Okan right after elementary school. We studied together till the end of high school. While our personal interests carried us away in different ways -positive sciences for me and social sciences for him-, we both stayed in the academic world. I am now experiencing the happiness of reading a book that he wrote about a technological subject which touched the lives of all of us and share a few sentences about it with the point of view by a social scientist.
I think the internet is the indispensable part of the 21st century. I am not saying this because it was invented for easier communication among people of science in the institution where I am now working on http(www) and the concept of the internet, at CERN and in different nations. If a question as “which is worse, no electricity or no internet?” can be asked, there is no need for debate. Moreover, if tactics of “my mobile phone battery should stay at 100%, let us charge the power-bank” are common against the possibility of a power cut, it is already too late to ask the question “is the digital world forced upon us?”.
Of course, everything happened so fast. In the recent past, we were filling buckets and bathtubs against the possibility of a water cut-off. However, let us not forget that the generation before us was storing flour and salt in their houses for “there might be a war.” They would ask “can you use a fax machine, a photocopy machine?” in job interviews in the past and we would laugh. Then it became fashionable to write “I can use MS Word, MS Excel” in resumés. I still see this in some applications. They can use MS Office! It would be discrimination to say that I put the resumés of those who include this information at the bottom of the pile, right? Nevertheless, I do, because this does not give me additional information about them. If I find my father, to whom I gave an iPad that he never saw before in the morning, browsing internet pages by himself in the evening, young applicants should learn to express their diversity in other forms. Improvement is change, but the change is now faster.
I accept that my colleagues at CERN and I are not only living in technology, but also lead its advancement and even innovation. Just like people living among trees not being able to see the forest, while living in a digital and virtual world we invented, we usually ignored or even failed to notice the social influence of these developments. Does the digital world bring discrimination? Of course it does. Is a person with an iPhone 7 the same as another who is still using their Nokia from the time of Noah? The former is carrying beautiful photographs in←5 | 6→ their pocket; the other can only call home. If they want, they can carry a camera in the other pocket.
