The Role of Unrealized Architectural Projects in the Development of the Conscious Society: Lithuanian Case

Abstract: Looking at the concept of the conscious society1 through the lens of architecture, the article raises the following questions: what in such a context is the conscious society and social self-­consciousness; what ways and preconditions for public participation in architectural processes have formed historically; how can unrealized projects influence the conscious society, and vice versa. To answer these questions, the article analyses the unrealized projects in the context of growing social awareness. Social activeness2 in architecture is considered an inseparable component of this process, therefore the possibilities for society’s participation in designing processes are discussed first of all in the framework of different historical periods. Further in the article, the correlations and interactions between the unrealized architectural projects and conscious society are analysed. To illustrate this, the article examines some resonance projects that have attracted lots of attention, but never been implemented, as well as projects orientated towards the formation of social consciousness, created in the period starting from the beginning of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century After summarizing the research results, a direct correlation between the unrealised projects of public importance and social self-­consciousness, i.e. the society’s ability to concentrate, discuss and influence the governmental institutions, pass the determined decisions and precondition the unexpected course of architectural processes, has been established.
