Industry 4.0 from the MIS Perspective

Nowadays, an end-to-end industrial transformation called Industry 4.0 sets new goals for manufacturing and impacts on business outcomes. With some of its characteristic elements such as IoT (Internet of Things), digital twin simulation models, advanced robots, big data analytics, and virtual/augmented reality, Industry 4.0 is «de facto» going further. The book aims to provide relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area of Management Information Systems (MIS) with the scope of Industry 4.0. The strategic role of Industry 4.0 in the distributed business environment and the necessity to protect and properly utilize its key elements at different levels of organizations as well as in society are discussed.

1.  Introduction

Industry is the process of operationalizing the labor or the materials by processing them through various phases (Ertin, 1998). Industry not only is responsible for meeting demands but also is a significant, integral part for the development of countries. Urbanization and industrialization related to it have been consistently progressing in parallel to the growing population of the world. In fact, the innovations made on behalf of the industry have been described as the industrial revolution by means of these developments (Wilson, 2014). In the 18th century, the second industrial revolution had taken a new dimension due to the industrial and technological developments (Hackett, 1992), resulting in the start of using steam engines in production and the developments in textile industry (Deane, 1979). Especially the invention of electricity during the second industrial revolution allowed the industrial production to become mass produced (Atkeson & Kehoe, 2001). Even today, data transmission with tools that we have discovered, thanks to this industrial revolution, such as diesel engines (Diesel, 1912), internal combustion engines (Hendrickson III, 2014) and radio waves, is an indispensable part of many sectors. Moreover, it played a role in the development of the sectors which have the greatest market share in the world, such as the automotive, steel and energy sectors (Mokyr, 1998).
