One of the main objectives of planning and design is the reflection of the works to the space. Therefore, the starting point of this book is to reveal the research conducted by different professions in the field of spatial planning and design. For this purpose, original researches on direct application and land were included. Planning and design studies need co-operation between professions in order to fulfill this philosophy. These activities are effective means of fulfilling the philosophy of sustainability. Planning and design is a tool to tell the story of a community, and how it’s past, present and future work together for a sustainable tomorrow. The design process in which the most appropriate spatial compositions are revealed by shaping the areas in the direction of planning decisions, develops in the continuation of the planning process. 20 An Evaluation of Urban Texture Components in the Example of Şanliurfa Hasimiye Square with Regards to Urban Identity and Urban Aesthetics

Abstract: Urban equipment elements are indispensable elements of urban open spaces. They are the objects that facilitate the life of the individuals within the urban texture, provide communication between the individuals and add value and identity to the space functionally and aesthetically. Sanliurfa is a very ancient city its history dating back to 10,000 BC. In this study, urban furniture of Hasimiye Square, located in the old city of Sanliurfa, was evaluated in terms of urban identity and aesthetics. The purpose of this chapter is to evaluate the existing urban furniture of Hasimiye Square, and make new suggestions suitable to the traditional city texture. Within this scope, Sanliurfa Hasimiye Square and Sarayönü area were evaluated in this study. The urban furnitures in Hasimiye Square and Sarayonu area in the traditional city center of Sanliurfa were classified and problematic areas related to design and location selection decisions were determined. It has been determined that the Urban furniture elements of Hasimiye Square do not reflect the traditional square charecteristics of Sanliurfa; it has been observed that serial production based urban furniture are used which do not give importance to design. The meaning of urban furniture for the city and the relation they have established with the city have been evaluated in the context of Sanliurfa city identity and new suggestions suitable with traditional city texture have been made.
