Il discorso sulle migrazioni / Der Migrationsdiskurs

Approcci linguistici, comparativi e interdisciplinari / Sprachwissenschaftliche, vergleichende und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven

Edited By Daniela Pietrini

Abstract: In a highly formal extra linguistic setting and with mostly monologue like interventions, the round-tables talks on the topic of recent migration towards Europe, set up by different states or private organizations, are a moment of exchange between politicians and specialists with regard to the situation and further actions in administrating the fluxes of migrants. The politicians as well as the specialists reflect in their discourse on some difficulties in communicating ideas and proposals on a arduous topic that may prove to harm their image, intended as positive face or negative face, namely the wish to preserve their own liberty of action.

This study aims to describe in a qualitative and quantitative pragmatic perspective the approximators – with the two subtypes of the adaptors and the rounders – and the shields – the plausibility and the attribution shields – as intended by Fraser (2010), in a corpus of round-tables talks organized in Italy and Romania between 2015–2016. The corpus contains over nine hours of video registrations of oral interventions pronounced by specialists and politicians with responsibilities in the decisional process on migration politics, in the form of monologues and answers to questions coming from the moderators, from other participants to the debate or from the assistance.

The contrastive approach allows underlining the...
