Il discorso sulle migrazioni / Der Migrationsdiskurs

Approcci linguistici, comparativi e interdisciplinari / Sprachwissenschaftliche, vergleichende und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven

Edited By Daniela Pietrini

People believe that their cultural identity is threatened and react with aggression up to physical violence. As the concept of cultural identity was used about twenty years ago just by minorities and migrants, there is obviously a more general theoretical problem that has to be cleared systematically. Conceptual analysis shows that the concept of cultural identity is close to that of national identity. As it is difficult to identify a real national identity because in reality there is no essence which is common to all compatriots but is lacking in all others, it will be nearly impossible to find a clear line that separates one culture from another. The idea of group-identity is mostly connected to the idea of a community that people do not want to loose. But such a community, be it between the members of the nation or those of a particular culture, cannot be ordered or created “from above” by any kind of authority. Who tries to do so, takes the risk to support authoritarian or even fascist structures. So, if we want to help groups, no matter whether groups of migrants or of autochthones, to maintain their identity, we may support their traditions, efforts to preserve their language etc. But there isn’t...
