2 Vertrauen und soziale Systeme

Oswald Vertrauen in Organisationen Abstract Structural changes in an organization or fluctuations among employees or in the management because of the merging of two organizations are especially impres- sive circumstances in which great insecurities exist whether contracts or social norms will be maintained. Misuse of trust in situations of insecurity can be con- trolled by legal regulations, and by the union representing the employee’s inter- ests. However, those more or less legal protections will be never complete or sufficient, and they are time and money consuming. Social interactions in an organization will therefore require trust among employees, trust towards the per- sonal supervisors, and trust in the management. The following chapter will first concentrate on the meaning of trust that people have in their own organization, and the question of whether organizational trust implies more than interpersonal trust. Second, the central conditions will be discussed that weaken or strengthen the development of trust in an organization, like procedural justice of the super- visor. Finally it will be asked why it is after all so important not only for the em- ployees but also for the management’s self interests to enhance and to maintain trusting relations in their organization.
