Das Buch untersucht die Darstellung John Kennedys in der amerikanischen Literatur, schwerpunktmäßig in narrativen Langtexten von Anton Myrer, Vance Bourjaily, William F. Buckley Jr., Norman Mailer, Don DeLillo, Wright Morris, John Updike und William Manchester. Ergänzend werden Dramen von Barbara Garson und Wendy MacLeod sowie Lyrik von Robert Frost, John Berryman, W.H. Auden, Allen Ginsberg, Lou Reed und anderen herangezogen. Den theoretischen Bezugsrahmen bildet das Konstrukt des kollektiven Gedächtnisses. Die Ergebnisse der einzelnen Werkanalysen konvergieren in einem textübergreifenden literarischen Profil, das eine neue Perspektive auf Kennedy und Einblicke in seinen Sonderstatus im nationalen Bewusstsein eröffnet.
