Fundamental Questions in Foreign Language Teaching Maria Dakowska (Warszawa) 1. Introduction Glottodidactic conceptions developed by Professor Franciszek Grucza are genu- inely avant-garde, providing inspiration to a multitude of scholars. I take this op- portunity to outline the main, though certainly not all of the ideas which I have been fortunate to learn from him during my long period of apprenticeship and work at the University of Warsaw in order to develop them in the context of my own framework. Needless to say, I am far from expecting Professor Grucza to be willing or prepared to accept my elaboration as congruent with his current conception of glottodidactics. First, I list what seem to me to be the crucial tenets of the discipline to use them as a point of departure for addressing the key questions about the na- ture of foreign language learning and teaching in the empirical reality. 2. On the constitution of glottodidactics as an academic discipline (i.e. science) In his lectures and seminars which I attended in the 1980s and 1990s, as well as nu- merous publications, Professor Grucza emphasized that his goal is to accelerate the process of modernization of teaching foreign languages in Poland. In order to ac- complish this task he chose the route of constituting an academic discipline focused on foreign language learning and teaching, called glottodidactics, as a source of well- justified knowledge for this purpose.
