1 Introduction 1.1. Defining the subject “It is the duty o f Polish m usicologists to know m ore or less as m uch about us as they do about the com posers who live in Poland”1. These words com e from R om an Palester’s letter to the organisers o f a sym ­ posium devoted to the works o f Polish ém igré com posers w hich took place in W arsaw in 1988, a pro ject initiated by the M usicology Section of the Polish C om posers’ U nion. The conference was an exceptional event, and the first one o f its kind. The papers to be presented there were to com bine critical and aesthetic interpretation with artistic evaluation o f the works, and som e o f them were to be devoted to A ntoni Szalowski2. U nfortunately, the achievem ents o f Szalowski, one o f the m ain represen­ tatives o f Polish N eoclassicism , were, after all, om itted from the con ­ ference program m e.
