Selected Papers from the IAUPE Malta Conference in 2010

This collection unites 21 papers mainly presented at the 21st IAUPE (International Association of University Professors of English) Conference held at the Valetta Campus of the University of Malta in mid-July 2010. Most periods of world-wide literature in English from Anglo-Saxon to the present day were represented as well as many aspects of language and linguistics. One section «Writers and the Mediterranean» was of particular local interest.

Preface Ian Kirby University of Lausanne The present collection of articles represents for the most part papers given at the 21st Triennial Conference of the International Association of University Professors of English, which was held at the Valletta Campus of the University of Malta during the week beginning 19 July 2010 under the presidency of Professor Peter Vassallo. A few papers were given at the Association’s Medieval Symposium which im- mediately preceded the main conference and which also took place in Malta. The Conference, like its predecessors, offered a wide range of sections in the field of English studies. Most periods of world-wide literature in English from Anglo-Saxon to the present day were represented as well as many aspects of language and linguistics, and there was one subject of particular local interest, ‘Writers and the Mediterranean’. Following IAUPE’s regular practice, the con- ference week also included cultural activities and visits to some of the many ancient monuments of Malta and Gozo. Of these latter, a number were included in a one-day post-Conference tour of the islands. The Association is open to all full professors of English and other scholars of distinction, and welcomes applications for membership.
