The Iconic Turn in Education

Some twenty years after the term iconic turn has been coined, and with a deluge of digital images, videos and animations surrounding, indeed invading, the learning environment, it appears that educational science, and the everyday practice of education, still very much labour under the impact of the past dominance of alphabetic literacy. But while educators clearly need to retain a measure of conservatism, maintain an acute sense for the logic of the written text and preserve the ability to handle extended hardcopy documents, they have to rise to the task, also, of exploiting the potentials of online networked communication, the constant presence of images, both static and moving, and the continuous interplay of words and images.

Katz – Daniel Halpern Introduction The theme of The Second International Conference on Visual Learning, Buda- pest 2011, was “Development – Discovery – Design”. Our comments are direct- ed primarily to the second thematic leg of this triad, “discovery”, and stem from an interest in the pictorial turn in philosophy. The aim here is to expand upon path-breaking research by Rudolf Arnheim in the field of visual thinking with particular reference to the concept of time. We use his tools, as well as a student survey, to explore folk visual metaphors of the concept of time and relate them to an individual’s psychological and sociological characteristics, that is, in a sense, to personality and culture. The Pictorial Turn Our line of work grows in part out of an inquiry into the so-called “pictorial turn” in philosophy.
