Re-examining Economic Differentials and Poverty in Japan: Masafumi Matsuba

Extract

635 Re-examining Economic Differentials and Poverty in Japan Masafumi Matsuba Foreword The purpose of this article is to discuss aspects of the economic differentials and poverty in contemporary Japan, based upon the developing discussion regarding this theme1, taking notice of the structural changes in contemporary capitalism, the characteristics of the differentials and poverty in advanced countries, and keeping a watchful eye on both the poor and the wealthy. There are many papers discussing the differentials and criticizing poverty. They are also crystallizations of valuable human sympathy and intellectual ef- forts which try to extend a hand to people who are in economic difficulties. But it is difficult to say that the scientific effort to consider calmly the historical character of differentials and the social specific gravity of poverty in today’s advanced capitalist countries, and the effort to grope for realistic ways of tack- ling poverty and low incomes have been sufficient. [J] indicates that the book or the article was written and published in Japanese. 1 For reference, here I show only representative books published after 2005. Fumio Ohtake, In- equality in Japan: Illusion and Future of the Differential Society [J], Nihon Keizai Shimbunsha, 2005; Atsushi Miura, Downstream Society. The Appearance of a New Social Stratum [J], Ko- bunsha Shinsyo, 2005; Toshiaki Tachibanaki, Differential Society. What are the Problems? [J], Iwanami Shinsyo, 2006; T. Tachibanaki/K. Urakawa, Research on Poverty in Japan [J], Univer- sity of Tokyo Press, 2006; Masami Iwata, The Contemporary Poverty. Working Poor, Homeless and Public Assistance [J...
