However, if evidence of Chapdelaine’s sexual seductions exists, it would be surprisingly negligent of the Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris and authorities in the Roman Curia not to have discovered it in the 144 years between Chapdelaine’s death in 1856 and canonization in 2000. If negative material had been discovered, would it not have been wiser to have deleted Chapdelaine from the list rather than suppressing the discovery, given the danger that a later revelation might have tainted the entire list of 120 martyrs? One also notes that the official Chi- nese press has accused other religious figures of rape and sexual coercion. The list of accused includes two other new saints, Fr. Francesco Fernández de Capil- las, O.P. (1607-1648) and Fr. Alberico Crescitelli (1863-1900). In addition, the list of accused includes the contemporary religious leader Zhang Hongbao, a colorful spiritual healer who founded the non-Christian sect Zhong in 1988 and fled to Guam in 2000, seeking amnesty from the United States.58 In each case, an accusation of sexual crimes is used to discredit one’s religious work.
