29 3 Assessing competence within the TRIFT project (Bernadette Dilger, Universität zu Köln) For the implementation of the competence matrix in the TRIFT project it was necessary to develop an assessment approach based on the compe- tence matrix in order to test its usefulness as a guideline for a competence- based assessment. In the next chapter we describe the background and the aims of competence assessment within the TRIFT project. More specifi- cally, the functions of competence assessment are described. Therefore, certain aspects of the definition of competence and the competence matrix serving as the fundamentals for the assessment regime are explained including the different instruments used. In the last part of this chapter, the experiences with this assessment in the project are described and first modifications are shown. 3.1 Background and aim of competence assessment within the TRIFT project Within the TRIFT project it was the aim to foster individual competence development through an international mobility programme in the field of foreign trade. As this mobility is part of a formal vocational educational programme it is necessary to make the competence development visible and transparent in order to recognize and acknowledge this development. As a precondition for this recognition and acknowledgement it is necessary to define the understanding of the nature of competence in mutual understanding. The expectations regarding the competences in the field of foreign trade, throughout the partner in the project and the individual, define the shared understanding of competence.
