Heitor Alvelos is currently Professor of Design and New Media at the University of Porto, Associate Director of ID+: Research Institute for Design, Media and Culture, and Post-doctorate Research Fellow at IN- ESC Porto: Institute of Engineering and Computer Systems. He holds a PhD in Media Culture (Royal College of Art, London, 2003) and a MFA in Visual Communication (School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1992). He is also currently a member of the UTAustin-Portugal pro- gram coordination team for the development of digital media, member of the Scientific Board of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, and member of the advisory board for Digital Communi- ties at Ars Electronica. His main research areas include media studies, participatory media, post-subcultural ethnography, and cultural crimi- nology. Nuno de Almeida Alves is a sociologist and Assistant Professor at ISCTE—IUL (University Institute of Lisbon). He is also a Researcher at the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology—University Insti- tute of Lisbon, where he has conducted research on knowledge socie- ty, education, youth and social inequalities. Mathias Blanc is a Research Fellow at the French National Research Center (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in Lille, France.
