Fİgen Algül Greek Community Radio in Turkey: İHO TİS POLİS Introduction It might be said that community radios are the media which are used by society or people who have common ideas, characteristics, interests, or ownership (Possi, 2003, p. 167–169). Community radios are the kind of media which ensure media plurality, freedom of speech, diversity of content, and representation of distinct groups and interests of society; they encourage public and gender balanced access, support for cultural diversity, self governance and media literacy, open dialogue at the local level, transparency, and voice the sound of the voiceless, becoming the voice of the people (Milan, 2009, p. 600). Community radios are used for mobili- sation, sensitisation, and education for holistic development. Community radios are small-scale and they are non-profit seeking, open, or accountable to the com- munity which they serve. They are essentially run by volunteers, are open to the participation of community members in terms of programme making and govern- ance, enable participation and access in terms of integrating the non-professional media producers in the work, and contribute to social change. Community radios can serve communities of interest, geographical communities, and cultural com- munities. The key role of community radio is to green tolerance and pluralism in society. Community radios provide a public broadcasting service and present accessibility for all. On the other hand, they serve reproduction and representa- tion of common, shared interests.
