The book investigates Greek industrial relations in a global context at different periods. Combining sociological, institutional, political and social aspects, it discusses industrial relations from statism that prevailed up to the ‘80s, to policies after the early ‘90s requesting modernisation and democratic neocorporatism. It also analyzes the dramatic overthrow of the institutional and real balance in the labour market after the conclusion of the Memorandum with the E.U. and I.M.F. and the great recession of the last six years.

4.1 Introduction The system of industrial relations in Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Great Brit- ain, the Netherlands, Spain and Greece are essential components of the European social model. A key feature of these European systems is the common historical, sociopolitical and cultural traditions, which have led them to develop systems that are almost uniform in the mechanisms of solidarity and social protection of employees, procedures and institutions of representation and participation. These data have formed the tradition of the welfare state with a flagship set of social relationships on social dialogue and collective bargaining. The structural changes that have occurred in recent decades in industrialized societies have had a significant impact on national industrial relations systems, which were completed in a dominant economic crisis and an uncertain geopolitical envi- ronment. The interaction among national systems of industrial relations and the changing economic and technological environment have shown low growth rates and high unemployment rates as major trends at an economic level. At an infrastructure level, there have been technological and socioeconomic variations that have occurred because of the use of new technologies, trends of interna- tionalization of economy, the integration of new socio-political and economic formations, the change in size and structure of enterprises and diversification of the employment map.
