Ivica Kolečáni Lenčová Kunst im Fremdsprachenunterricht (am Beispiel der Literatur und der bildenden Kunst im DaF-Unterricht) Abstract: The document underscores the significance of artworks in foreign language teaching. In view of changes to education in recent years and requirements for a holistic development of the pupil’s personality, it is particularly the works of art which support emotional development as well as development of motivation, ethical values and creati- vity as prerequisites for a high quality of life. Art (in our case literary texts and prints of artwork) definitely deserves to be included in the modern teaching of foreign languages, as this method allows cognition to be in harmony with emotions and imagination. Inte- gration of artefacts into the teaching process emphasises both the aesthetic and ethical dimensions (which are often absent from the teaching of foreign languages), enriches the teaching process with qualities of humanistically oriented procedures and forms. Through their multidimensional nature and openness, artefacts provide stimuli for the pupil’s self- formation and for establishing his value structures. Despite the aspects mentioned above, the artefacts are neither obligatory nor binding in the foreign language teaching. It is, therefore, necessary to eliminate this discrepancy between the potentiality of artefacts and their implementation in foreign languages, and to seek solutions for their effective and systematic integration in the teaching process.
