This collection of articles offers readers a cross-section of current research on contemporary and historical concepts and representations of (cultural) values as documented in popular culture, public space, the arts, works of literature and in ethnic contexts. The contributors to this volume are from the US, Algeria, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Albania, Serbia, Turkey, and Austria. Their very different cultural, ideological, scientific, academic and non-academic perspectives and backgrounds allow insights from many different viewpoints.

The Editor Veronika Bernard (PhD) is an Associate Professor (Privatdozentin) with the De part ment of German Language and Literature at the University of Innsbruck and a member of the research platform CenT (Cultural Encoun- ters and Trans fer). She has been the director of the project Breaking the Ste reotype. Oriental and Occidental Ste re otypes in the Course of Time (www.breaking-the-stereo ty pe2009-2010.over-blog.org) and one of the two directors of the IMAGES pro ject (http://the-images-project.weebly.com/). Veronika Bernard is a mem ber of the adviso ry board of CINEJ Cinema Journal (http://cinej.pitt.edu). She has earned her postdoctoral qualification (Habilitation) in Ger man li te ra tu re by her postdoctoral thesis Das emotionale Moment der Veränder- ung. Stadt als Dichtung. Her PhD thesis is about the representation of the Orient in 19th century Austrian travel wri tings. Her research interests are: cultural encounters in movies; migrant litera- ture (Ger man-Tur kish authors); European views and stereotyping of the Orient; and the city in literature.
