Internationalen wissenschaftlichen Konferenz Bildungsreform und Lehrerausbildung, die vom Ministerium für Bildung und Wissenschaft der Republik Litauen, der Litauischen Universität für Bildungswissenschaften in Vilnius (LEU) und der Pädagogischen Hochschule Heidelberg – University of Education gemeinsam veranstaltet wurde. Das Hauptthema der Konferenz waren Bildungs- und Qualitätsstandards der Hochschul- und Schulbildung. Carsten Rohlfs, Marius Harring Developing a Democratic School as an Educational Responsibility Abstract School represents an important living environment for children and youth and accordingly exhibits a great socio-spatial as well as socialisational influence. It follows that school is not only tasked with teaching subject-related knowledge, but also with the development of a democratic self-image of the students. The present contribution starts here and shows that strengthening personality, practicing socially conform, non-violent forms of behavior, and conveying values that lend themselves to consensus and the orientation by democratic prin- ciples must not stay an abstract-theoretical element of a school concept, but must be practiced at all levels of everyday life in school, so that students may recognize, early and with lasting effect, the value of living a life based on democratic principles. Introduction The living conditions of young people in Germany have changed in recent decades at an unprecedented rate and so far unknown quality – changes which present ado- lescents themselves, but also the institution of school, with many new challenges, opportunities and risks: The transformation of the family, ongoing mediatisation, a change in educational culture associated with a significantly expanded area of freedom, increasing individualism and independence in contrast with prolonged financial dependence on parental income, and thus a lack of independence in some way, an increased stress experience through social discrimination, a change in liv- ing environment, the conversion of leisure time into something which resembles...
