This volume is dedicated to the subject of mobile communication and the transition in everyday life. Mobile media have become a part of the media ensemble and lead to specific media communication practices. Researching the integration of mobile media to everyday life allows a further analysis of the process of mediatization. The collected essays of this volume trace back to an international conference «(Mobile) Media and the Change of Everyday Life» at the University of Erfurt. The contributions investigate various aspects of the vibrant field of mobile communication.

Introduction

This study1 examines communicative actions of individuals in public space and analyses media-induced usage structures, based on the assumption of progressing media expansion in temporal, structural and social regards (cf. Krotz 2001).

There has been a wide range of thematically and methodically differently conducted studies in the field of mobile communication, which was also found out to be the main form of usage during the empirical stage of this study (cf. i.e. Burkart 2007; Campbell / Ling 2009; Glotz / Bertschi / Locke 2005; Höflich 2006, 2007, 2008; Höflich / Hartmann 2007; Katz 2006, 2008; Ling 2008). But still Katz (2006: 66) calls for a stronger consideration of the desideratum of public space in future studies on mobile communication. This study answers this call. Another attraction that a study of public space provides is the examination of the continuing process of taring between public and private. This topic has come back into focus again with the introduction of mobile phones into our everyday lives (cf. also Höflich 2005a). The public space is an area which individuals use and, simultaneously, shape on a daily basis. Studying communicative actions in public space also offers an opportunity to analyse and capture the use of media as a continuing course of action of people and in how far new media methods of access change social norms and coexistence.
