Für Komparatisten der Erziehung galt das 1817 publizierte Forschungsprogramm von Jullien bislang als der Beginn der Vergleichenden Erziehungswissenschaft. Aber die Abhandlung über den englisch-deutschen Bildungsvergleich von Hecht ist rund 20 Jahre älter und in einer sozialhistorischen Situation entstanden, als die alteuropäische Ordnung der Nationen und Staaten in die internationale Ordnung der Nationalstaaten überging. Comparatists of education usually assume that the research program published by Jullien in 1817 is the beginning of comparative education. But the text by Hecht comparing English and German school education is about 20 years older. It originates in a socio-historical situation when the old European order of nations and states is transformed into the new international order of nation states. The present volume offers a close look at the treatise by Friedrich August Hecht.

Res sane non inutilis foret, si, qua ratione diversae nationes variis aetatibus in erudienda atque regenda iuventute usae fuissent, e certis historiarum monumentis eruere possemus. Quae vero hac in re ab auctoribus antiquis graecis et romanis, occasione oblata, velut in transitu, commemorata sunt, non nisi lacerata et mutilata membra corporis existimanda sunt. Ut enim de maxima parte historicorum antiquorum, quorum scripta ad nos peruenerunt, nihil dicam, quippe qui bellorum historiam, ab artium et disciplinarum historia longe remotam, scribendam susceperunt: ii etiam, qui de litteris egerunt, totum adolescentum erudiendorum negotium, tanquam rem ipsorum tempore satis notam, praetermiserunt. Iis vero seculis, quibus omnis doctrina, inprimis autem litterae humaniores, quae apud Graecos et Romanos tanto in pretio erant, in deterius labi coeperant, usque ad ea tempora, quibus lux melior litteris assulsit, scriptores historiarum, aut potius annalium, longe alias res, mirabiles saepe et superstitiosas, narrandas sibi proposuerunt. Qui historiam coenobiorum scripserunt, interdum scholarum in iis conditarum, mentionem faciunt: sed tamen, quod maxime in hac re spectandum esset, ignoraverunt, aut non curarunt.

Bonis litteris restauratis in omnibus fere partibus Europae, ubi hae litterae colebantur, non multum discriminis in docendi ratione fuisse videtur. Germani recentioribus temporibus hoc in genere multa nova attulerunt, de quorum necessitate et utilitate sententiae virorum doctorum adhuc discrepant. Si quis conditionem rei scholasticae populorum singulorum vostrae aetatis describere conetur, rem sane arduam aggrediatur.
