Das ungarische Grundgesetz im Spiegel der deutschsprachigen Medien
Abstract: The new Hungarian Basic Law was heavily criticised in both domestic and Western media. The Western media, however, did not always cover the content of the Basic Law correctly. Some statements were simply false (e.g. that the Basic Law abolished the republic), others distorted (e.g. that the Basic Law made national or Christian values obligatory, or that it abolished democracy). On the other hand, quite a few problematic aspects of the Basic Law were never even mentioned in Western media. This essay examines the criticism of the Western media and the critical points of the Hungarian Basic Law from a legal point of view, thus trying to give the sometimes quite emotional debate a foundation in the text and in the legal facts of the Basic Law.
