Housing Practices for Disabled People in Turkey

Introduction Since the existence of human beings, one of their basic needs has been the need for shelter. The habit of building shelters has been a basic form of behaviour starting with the primitive man up to today. In fact, today it has become more than a basic need, for it is a means to reflect a person’s culture, personality, and status. This study aims to analyse the current situation of housing production suiting the needs of disabled people who are usually labelled as the other and are considered to be beyond status in terms of providing housing and housing needs. The study analyses and discusses housing policies in Turkey related to disabled people. More precisely, it examines the practices and duties of the Housing De- velopment Administration of Turkey (TOKİ), which provides housing for people from lower and middle classes in Turkey, and the suitability of these housing practices in meeting the needs of disabled people. The study was conducted with the sample method.
