Participation of Youth in the Decision-Making Process for the Design and Planning of Urban Public Spaces: The Case of a Street and a Shopping Mall
Introduction Young people pass through a transitional age, which, as a period of life, is some- where between childhood and adulthood (Weller, 2003). In the representation of ‘youth’ in popular discourse, there is contradiction and complexity. They are seen both as hopes for the future and also potential threats for the permanence and stability of society. Armağan (2004) argues that youths are the most dynamic and the most energetic segment of a society. However, they are also one of the most problematic segments, as they are affected by social problems most of the time. Therefore, it is impossible to isolate the problems of youth from the problems of society in general. Young people might have acquired certain stereotypes in childhood and dur- ing their adolescence. They try to explore the implications thereof, including the constraints and demands that social boundaries have established for them and for their social behaviour (Hendry et al., 1993). As part of this transitional middle ground, young people are also excluded from many spaces reserved to citizenship and adult realms of the socio-political participation (Weller, 2003). As Ojala (2005) pointed out, with the influence of globalisation, individuals’ identity development takes place in a larger global context within which young people have to consider the way that global nature influences them, as well as the way they affect the global system.
