The Situation of Women After Divorce in Turkey
Introduction Divorce is a phenomenon that troubles the unity of a family, causing its fragmen- tation and dissolution. Increasing the role of women in the working field brings socio-economic independency to women. Worldwide, human rights associations focus more and more on women’s rights. Furthermore, on one hand, this has a positive effect, and, on the other hand, it leads to some major problems such as the dissolution of a marriage with its legal manifestation, the divorce. Thus, the family faces a decrease of dependency between spouses which eventually leads to divorces. Undoubtedly, women and children are affected mostly by the process of divorce. After the divorce, women are labeled as “the divorced women.” This situation affects women’s working life, family life, and her social environment. For, the women’s liberty is subject to social pressure. Women, on the one hand, have to try to adapt to the new living conditions and to cope with the social pressure of her environment. On the other hand, they have to take full responsibility for their children. Thus, women are faced with various problems, such as psycho-social and economic problems after the divorce, and they have to find ways to overcome this situation. This study, which deals with the increase in the divorce rate in Turkey, aims to explain the problems that women face after divorce. This study evaluates the rel- evant literature and TSI data, proposing suggestions as solutions for this problem.
