Interculturalism as an Articulation of Diversity
A Generative Phenomenological Approach
Abstract We adopt the phenomenological attitude to our multicultural world by differentiating it from interculturalism. We defend its normative sense and its capacity to articulate different cultures beginning from the recognition of persons and intersubjectivity as well as their generation of meaning. This hermeneutic exercise will reactivate certain phenomenological concepts that allow us to understand intersubjectivity, social reality and the encounters between cultures through dialogue, tradition and Bildung. We mainly emphasize the Merleau-Ponty’s interpretation of Lebenswelt (life-world) constituted through temporal consciousness. We will conclude by defending the restoration of an existential universality to make sense of multiculturalism as interculturalism. The latter emerges not by denial of its own culture and the support for any other culture, but it is consciously built as a process of identification within the bosom of multiple differences.
