Prototypical structures of genres arise in precise periods under very particular circumstances, which can be influenced by the exchange between cultures and languages as well as by media change. As a consequence, we propose a theoretical model for approaching generic developments taking into account the historicity and (inter) culturalism as well as the continuous evolution of media and multimodality. We argue that a linguistic approach to these processes involves a careful study of the elements that constitute a genre and the respective discursive traditions in order to demonstrate changes in the profile of a textual genre or to identify its structural and rhetorical core. At the same time we highlight the theoretical and methodological challenges to explain the influence of diversification, mixing and convergence processes in the generic change between convention and innovation as it accelerates in phases of strong media change.The theoretical reflections are accompanied by an analysis of the textual genre of letters to the editor or letters to the direction which belongs to a well-established genre tradition and which reflects the socio-historical context of its production very clearly (e.g. the system of mass media, the role of editorials, the interaction with readers). Moreover, its textual structure and framework of "originalization" are determined by this context. From a diachronic perspective, changes occur induced by internal factors (e.g. stylistic changes) and external factors, such as profound changes in the political system.
