From 10th to 12th September 2014, an international conference on the topic of “1914/2014 – World War I. Childhood and Young Adulthood during the War, Literature and Culture of Remembrance” took place at Holzhausenschlösschen, Frankfurt/Main. Official host of this conference was the Department for Children’s and Young Adult Literature and Research, Faculty 10 Modern Languages of the Goethe University, Frankfurt/Main. The conference was organised and chaired by Hans-Heino Ewers, the parting director of the institute. It was sponsored by the foundation Waldemar-Bonsels-Stiftung, Munich, and the anniversary fund “100 Jahre Goethe Universität”.
In memory of the outbreak of the First World War 100 years ago, the institute also organised a lecture series in the summer semester 2014 and presented about 120 picture books, children’s and young adult’s books and magazines from the war years in an exhibition, which was also displayed in the Klingspor museum in Offenbach at the end of 2014.
In order to summarise the scientific contributions about Children’s and Young Adult Literature during or about World War I in one volume, the papers by Bernd Dolle-Weinkauff, Hans-Heino Ewers, Christa Hämmerle, Friedrich C. Heller and Ernst Seibert, which have been published elsewhere before, have been republished in revised versions. All other articles trace back to talks that were held at the conference.
