Our Maestro and His Pupils
During the period in which I attended Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli’s piano courses, I became acquainted with a distinguished group of pianists from all over the world. Some of them I met only once or twice, others I saw several years running. These were both older and younger colleagues. Those who were already busy with professional work and concert engagements were not always able to participate in the courses systematically. Others, especially those from distant countries — Paulina O’Connor from Australia, for instance — had to remain in Italy to await the next course. They kept in touch with the Maestro, and he looked after them in such free time as he had during breaks between concert tours.
It would be impossible for me to name all of the pianists I met on the courses. I shall just mention those with whom I became more friendly. One of these was in fact Paulina O’Connor, who assisted Michelangeli as interpreter on some of his tours, and also during the courses. Among other things, she acted as interpreter when I had my first lessons with the Maestro, translating from Italian into English. The following year I was already able to communicate with Michelangeli in his native tongue. Other close colleagues of mine were Camille Budarz, an American of Polish descent, and the Chinese An-Li-Pang.
