After the collapse of the Nazi regime in May 1945, many religious orders offered an invaluable contribution to the reconstruction of ecclesiastical structures in Austria, one of them being the “Barmherzigen Brüder” (Brothers of Mercy), running seven hospitals in Austria. Confessional hospitals and nursing homes are an important component of the Austrian healthcare system. Despite having to start over after the massive destructions convents and hospitals had suffered during World War II, the “Barmherzige Brüder” succeeded in transforming their charitable institution into a modern and competitive healthcare enterprise.
