Inklings was the name of a group of Oxford scholars and writers whose best-known members were J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. The German Inklings-Gesellschaft, founded in 1983, is dedicated to the discussion and dissemination of their works and of writers commonly associated with them and to the study of the fantastic in literature, film and the arts in general. The proceedings of the annual Inklings conferences are being published in yearbooks. This volume contains nine papers presented at the 2014 conference on Dark Visions – Margaret Atwood’s Imaginative Travels into the Regions of the Uncomfortable. The contributions deal with Atwood’s novels and also with the role of the North in literature at large. In addition, there are five general articles and numerous reviews.
The Devil as Tragic Figure in English Literature Part Two – From the Romantics to Contemporary Fiction

The devil has long been a focal point for the definition of good and evil, and in the traditional Christian worldview Satan is the major source of evil in the world. The examination of the devil figure in English literature can offer insight into the changing representations of evil, especially the transformation of the devil figure as a literary character and a point of comparison for ethical concerns. This paper aims to explore the tragic aspects of the devil as the personification of evil in English literature, considering evil as a state of mind that is inherently tragic for all sides, but also to examine the unfortunate mechanism of demonisation. As a continuation of the overview in the first part, which covered the genesis of the devil figure in the Scriptures and its employment in English literature from Old English poetry until Milton’s Paradise Lost, this survey explores the devil as potentially tragic figure from the late 18th century to contemporary fiction, reflecting major discourses on the nature of evil in religion, politics, psychology and philosophy.
