The so-called german culture in the Duchy Kurland and Semgallen at the second half of the 18th century – at that time part of Poland’s kingdom, today part of Latvia – was shaped not only by the german duke and his russian noble wife but also to a great extent by the nobility and the merchants. Although the majority of the population (Latvians, Poles, Russians) living as farmers and serfs had not learnt to read or write there was a cultural exchange between them.
