Abstract Presentations of a certain type are quite common in all varieties of German schools, no matter whether they are academic or vocational. Based on the “learning by teaching” concept students give talks on all kinds of topics. Frequently these tasks turn out to overwhelm students in many ways, because they do not only have to cope with the challenges of their topic, they also should make didactic decisions and find out what aspects of their topic are relevant or irrelevant for their fellow students. As a result of these excessive demands students’ talks of this description tend to be inefficient for the speaker and for the classroom audience alike.
The alternative introduced in this paper is a problem-based approach, where the assignment of tasks imitates real life conditions. Presentations in business contexts always go beyond mere teaching or transfer of information. The speaker wants to persuade the audience to adopt a certain perspective or to share his or her view, he or she wants to add value and meaning to the object he or she is talking about. This can be simulated in school if the students give their presentations as a role play. The task defines what role the presenter and his or her audience play.
