Für Claudia Maurer Zenck
At many points throughout the 20th century, musical or visual arts tried to extend the very basis of its materials. Marcel Duchamp thought about „non-retinal“ objects (objects which attain value not by being looked at, but by being thought about). The same is true for John Cage, whose silences detached his objects from the old term of sound. In this essay the problem of an „extended definition of art“ is discussed. Since the inclusion of everyday life, everyday sound or vision, we may loose any possibility of defining „value“ within the arts. Artists seem to work more or less within a context of a „lost definition of art“.
