Music, Poetry, Parody: Collins’s “The Passions: An Ode For Music” and Dickens’s Great Expectations
To adapt an often-quoted phrase from Samuel Beckett’s Murphy – “in the beginning was the pun” – here the beginning is the parody. In a well-known passage in Great Expectations, Dickens clearly parodies the poem that is my subject here:
