Übersetzung synchronisierter Kinderfilme in Polen. Zu den Fragen von Kreativität und Angemessenheit
The paper presents an analysis of 16 American animated films for children and their Polish dubbed translations in terms of culture-specific references exemplified in references to the sphere of politics. The paper shows that Polish dubbed films are characterized by “excessive domestication”, that is an overload of typically domestic references and the global strategy is undertaken by the translator(s) with the aim of making the films more appealing and entertaining to adults. The author attempts to show that the issues of creativity and adequacy cannot be misunderstood, and that film translators-to-be must be aware of the film author’s vision, their contract and the young recipients, who must not be taken for granted. One must bear in mind that domestication is supposed to help translators adapt the original film to the knowledge of the young viewers and their way of perceiving the world, determined by language and culture and, therefore, it is not adequate to address the text to an adult audience by means of typically Polish references which children have no chance to grasp.
Key words: dubbed films for children, creativity in translation, excessive domestication
