Polyglotte Filme als translatorische Herausforderung und didaktische Chance.Das Beispiel Inglourious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino 2009)
The following chapter introduces polyglot films as one of the challenges audiovisual translation has to face. Through the example of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds (2009) in its versions for German, Czech and Polish speaking audiences, the author investigates the three main kinds of audiovisual translation, Dubbing, Subtitling and Voice Over, as far as their performances in portraying diegetic language switching is concerned. Analysing key scenes of Tarantino’s film, it shows that neither of them is able to convey filmic multilingual reality satisfactorily. On the contrary, audiences have to put up with massive changes in the course of dialogues, the levelling of language nuances such as dialects, the suppressing of language changes or the shortening and flattening of multilingual conversations. So far, none of the main ways of audiovisual translation seems to be fully up to dealing with filmic reflections on languages, let alone with languages as constituent parts of a filmic story itself. Thus, educational programmes for translators have to draw attention to specialist knowledge in the field of media as well as multilingualism, fostered by a deep insight into the target language and multilingual creative practices covering various types of filmic texts such as film titles, posters or flyers.
