Landeskunde, Geschichte und ,Erinnerungsorte‘ im Fremdsprachenunterricht
Abstract: In the academic subject German as a foreign language there has been a long running discussion about the question of how to teach cultural background within the process of foreign language acquisition. History as one of the topics has to be embedded. The article gives an overview of different historical approaches, finally focusing on Pierre Nora’s concept of lieux de mémoire, which has been fashionable within the academic discourse of the last twenty years. How this particular approach can be used for the teaching of German as a foreign language is discussed. Despite difficulties the advantages seem to outweigh even serious risks as long as the attempts are well prepared, highly reflected and accompanied by research.
