Medialisierte Erinnerung als didaktische Chance
Abstract: The author draws attention to the key role media play in the concept of Cultural Memory, acting on the assumption that it is precisely this circumstance that might prove helpful in culture focused language teaching processes. Cultural memory is solely available in and through media, these in turn allow a wide range of motivating methods for exploring issues in the nodal point of language and culture, gaining by this ‘discourse competence’ (Claire Kramsch). The paper recalls key assumptions concerning the function and features of media in constructing and maintaining cultural memory and discusses possibilities of making them accessible to students of German as a Foreign Language. A focus on the visual and audiovisual appearance of current discourses might prove as successful here as a close reading of relevant texts on realms of memory. The examples refer to World War I and World War II as realms of memory prevailing in 2014/15.
